Emma Zhang

Working from her studio in Daxing district of Beijing City, Zhang’s artistic practice pulls away from the so-called ‘meaning’ of artistic expression, avoiding many ideological and complex things, to make the paintings as pure as possible. Zhang’s work consists of mediums such as acrylic paints, handmade paper, antique books and various fabrics. On first impression they seem purely monochromatic in earthy palettes of beiges and browns, but upon closer inspection there are a network of layers, typography, subtle tonal shifts and textures.
